چکیده

Ionospheric conductivity is not very easily measured directly. Incoherent scatter radars perhaps o€er the best method but can only measure at one point in the sky at any one time and are limited in their time resolution. Statistical models of average conductivity are available but these may not be applied to individual case studies such as substorms. There are many instances where a real-time estimate of ionospheric conductivity over a large ®eld-of-view is highly desirable at a high temporal and spatial resolution. We show that it is possible to make a reasonable estimate of the noctural height-integrated Pedersen conductivity, or conductance, with a single all-sky TV camera operating at 557.7 nm. This is not so in the case of the Hall conductance where at least two auroral wavelengths should be imaged in order to estimate additionally the energy of the precipitating particles.

Comparison of methods to determine auroral ionospheric conductances using ground-based optical and riometer data

Ground-based images of auroral optical emissions and cosmic radio noise absorption provide information on particle precipitation which enhances ionospheric conductances. Knowledge of this conductance field is important to understand the current systems associated with auroral features. Three methods of using ground-based optical and riometer data to estimate ionospheric conductances in the auro...

High-resolution maps of the characteristic energy of precipitating auroral particles

For the first time we produce high-resolution maps of the characteristic energy of precipitating electrons from ground-based instrumentation in the auroral zone over northern Scandinavia. This is done by combining intensity-calibrated optical data at 557.7 nm from the Digital All-Sky Imager (DASI) with auroral absorption images from the Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Studies (IRIS). Energy ma...

Spatial distribution of conductances and currents associated with a north-south auroral form during a multiple-substorm period

Using the method of characteristics to invert ground-based data of the ground magnetic ®eld disturbance and of the ionospheric electric ®eld, we obtain spatial distributions of ionospheric conductances, currents, and ®eld-aligned currents (FACs) associated with a north-south auroral form that drifts westwards over northern Scandinavia around 2200 UT on December 2, 1977. This auroral form is one...

Fine structure of breakup development inferred from satellite and ground-based observations

More than 60 breakups, including weak activations of the pseudo-breakup type, moderate breakups, and events of very strong auroral activity, were analyzed using ground-based TV data, together with satellite auroral images. We studied the fine subvisual details of spatial and temporal dynamics of active auroral forms and surrounding diffuse luminosity, both in the longitudinal and latitudinal di...

Field-aligned currents and ionospheric parameters deduced from EISCAT radar measurements in the post-midnight sector

Attempting to derive the field-aligned current (FAC) density using the EISCAT radar and to understand the role of the ionosphere on closing FACs, we conducted special radar experiments with the EISCAT radar on 9 October 1999. In order to derive the gradient of the ionospheric conductivity (grad6) and the divergence of the electric field (div E) nearly simultaneously, a special experiment employ...
